Your Business Shouldn't Need You

What I’m Thinking About

I loathe the concept of ā€œhustle cultureā€ and if you have been following me for even a short amount of time, it’s pretty clear that I firmly reject it.

I think the notion of 50+ hour work weeks are bullshit and I don’t believe productivity can be measured by the amount of time you put into a task.

If you are running a business, time in should not be a metric of your pay.

Or put into simpler terms — Your business shouldn’t need you.

I view individuals who refuse to implement systems and processes less as entrepreneurs and more as employees who have successfully created a job for themselves.

Is there a problem with this?

Certainly not, but this doesn’t offer me the liberation I seek.

I think there is more to life than being a proverbial ā€œfire extinguisherā€ who needs to remain close to the day to day operations of their business.

I admire and respect an entrepreneur who can disappear to Europe or Asia for a month while their business thrives.

I’m in awe when someone can do it for 6 months or a year.

That’s not to say that that I am a stranger to hard work — I find very little more rewarding than rolling up my sleeves and jumping into the trenches of a new endeavor.

I love the feeling of being ā€œin itā€ and creating something new to share with the world.

However, once the problems have been solved, my priorities quickly shift to developing processes and building a team to manage them.

I’ll still lend my support and push forward with business development, but in the end, my goal is to build something that can sustain without me.

My end game is self obsolescence.

Something I’m Excited For

This past week I picked up an entry level podcast rig consisting of a Zoom H6 Recorder and a Shure SM58 Microphone so I could expand my experiments with content creation into audio and, eventually, video.

Stay tuned over the next few weeks and months as I start to play around with some additional formats for sharing my thoughts.

In the meantime, I’m looking for recommendations on editing tools such as Adobe Audition, Riverside.fm, Audacity, and more so if you have something you love, please reach out.

Something I’m Reading

Ok, Dishoon may be a cookbook but it also can be described as a love letter & walking tour of South Bombay. I have yet to make it to India so for now I like to explore it through it’s regional culinary traditions and doing my best to replicate them here in New Jersey.
